I kept all my gold jewelry in one box, then I just found out lately that my yellow gold were stained by my white gold. My yellow gold has a white color that came from my white gold. My white gold dont any stain whatesoever. What is the cause? Can the stained be removed? Thanks

Gold Smith answers:

The stain has nothing to do with mixing your white gold jewelry with your yellow gold jewelry. If your ring has anything that can be soldered on like prongs or a ‘peg head’ or it was resized then the soldering sometimes shows through the yellow gold. In other words, where you see stains would be remnants of solder. A jeweler should be able to melt the solder off. Take it to be reviewed by a reputable jeweler and get a second opinion.

Good Luck!

Sharon asks…

Is there any way to prevent gold plated jewelry from tarnishing?

Is there any way to prevent gold plated jewelry from tarnishing? I always seem to find some cool gold jewelry and it suddenly turns brass looking.

Gold Smith answers:

Take it off befor taking showers and dont suck on it

Linda asks…

what causes gold jewelry to make a black mark on the skin?

Lately, when my daughter in law wears gold jewelry she gets a black or grayish area where the ring, bracelet, etc has been. And, YES, it is real gold! What can cause this?

Gold Smith answers:

It’s usualy because of high acid content in her skin, it just reacts with the gold..to stop it from happening, you can coat what ever she wears with a thin layer of clear nail polish, it will not ruin the gold, and it will protect her skin…

Your Questions About Selling Gold

Ruth asks…

Is there anything i need to do when my contract with Golds Gym comes to an end.?

My contract with Golds Gym is coming to an end this month. Do I need to contact anyone to notify them that I do not wish to renew?

Gold Smith answers:

Just to be safe YES. Some fitness centers will still charge you after cause you never told them you wanted to stop.

John asks…

Golds Gym: Do we have to get a personal trainer?

I’ve never been to a Gym before (besides school), and I’m looking to get a membership into Gold’s Gym.. This may be a stupid question but I can’t find anything on the website besides them talking about their history and personal trainers. Can’t I just go in and run on the treadmills and lift weights, etc?

Gold Smith answers:

No, you don’t have to get a personal trainer, although they’ll try to sell you on the idea. If you don’t want one, just tell them no.

Helen asks…

How much does Golds Gym charge for the summer?

So I’m a high school freshman and I’m just a bit overweight so I want to dedicate this summer to just hitting the gym everyday and get those pounds off. But I was wondering if you can join without a long term 1 year contract or anything like that, I just want to go for June, July, and August. How much would that probably cost? Oh also, Are there any age restrictions to gyms? I’ll be 16 this summer.

Gold Smith answers:

It varies from location to location. Hunt around for a place that’s cheap, that has the facilities you want, is clean, and will do a month-to-month contract. You do NOT want a long-term contract and you should easily be able to find a gym that will do month-to-month.

Your Questions About Selling Gold

Daniel asks…

I heard gold Prices are up alot. I’m not sure if it’s true or not. I have alot of gold Jewelry I will sell.

I wat to know what is the price per gram now compared to before prices went up if they did.

Gold Smith answers:

It has gone up you can find the price in stocks and shares in bussiness paper or on line but what you get will not be the same as the weigth of your jewelry as it depends on the carat of the gold (parts gold out of 24 eg. 14 carat is 14 out of 24 gold +10 parts that are not gold ) you can tell this by the hall mark and also they will have to refine it and this costs money only a few places will do this

Joseph asks…

How and where do you get the best price for broken gold jewelry?

I have several broken gold chains, bracelets, dental gold, and mismatched earrings and would like to get cash for the gold. I know I could take it to a pawn broker, but I’m not sure if this is the best way to turn the gold into cash. Any ideas?

Gold Smith answers:

If you choose to sell your gold as scrap, please do not use one of the outfits that advertise on TV–they will not give you the best price because they are marketing their services to the general public and not to in-the-trade individuals who are more knowledgeable.

Send your gold to a reputable refiner. There are several who offer refining services to the jewelry, dental, etc. Industries and that is where you would get the fairest shake for your scrap.

I’ve used David H. Fell & Co. In Los Angeles for years. They are a very reputable company with a good history and a well set-up refining service. See the link below.

If you sold your scrap gold to a jeweler, they would turn around and submit it to just such a refiner. A reputable jeweler would not reuse your gold because he would not be able to determine that it was within the legal variance limits of the karat value it was represented/hallmarked as. He would instead turn it into a refiner either for money or on account to be reimbursed with newly refined gold. Obviously, the price the jeweler would pay you would be less than what he received from the refiner.

Richard asks…

How do I know I’m getting fair price for my gold jewelry?

I notice many people are selling scrap, but I have intact heavy chains, bracelets, a diamond
wedding ring. What is a fair appraisal? I live in Wheaton, IL

Gold Smith answers:

You need to start reading about gold. 10 karat jewelry has 40% gold. YOu can put it on a scale and then go to coingallery.com ( i don’t work for them and it is free to use) and click on Buy/Sell Prices. Gold is around $1,500 an ounce. This is nearly pure gold. But it gives you an idea of what yours is worth.

Go to 2 or 3 jewelry stores. They are the most-likely to buy gold. They pay more than what a pawn shop would pay. They are going to re-sell it off to be melted so you won’t get any value for attractive jewelry. They will test the gold for purity. This is where you have to trust them if you don’t know the “karat”.

Your Questions About Selling Gold

Helen asks…

At 28, how do I get into the world of investment banking, i.e. like a trainee analyst at Goldman Sachs?

I attended film school, and after about 5 years in the business I am looking for a change of career. I was told that large investment companies look not only for people with business degrees or MBA’s but also people from different backgrounds such as liberal arts. Is 28 too late?

Gold Smith answers:

I work for an investment bank and we would hire you if you’re any good. New age discrimination legislation means It’s illegal now for banks to hire only recent grads

All the big investment banks have annual graduate recruitment programmes. They start interviewing for the 2007 intake very soon indeed, so start applying now. You can do it on their websites. My the bank I work for (and quite like, having worked for a large American investment bank previously) is called Macquarie:

http://www.macquarie.com/uk/aboutus/careers/graduate_recruitment.htm

You should think carefully about it, though. It’s a very tough career. Long hours, and sometimes boring work early on. Also, you will be a bit older than most of the guys you start with (although new starters from the continent are often in their mid to late 20′s).

However, the work can sometimes be exciting, you learn a lot about finance, and the pay is obviously very good (starting salaries typically around £35k, with a discretionary bonus of maybe around £20k at the end of the first year). At banks such as Goldman Sachs, though, you can honestly kiss your social life goodbye, at least for the first few years. 80 hour weeks are common.

Thomas asks…

What advise would you give someone if they want to land an internship with Goldman Sachs?

Well, I’m a Junior in HS with a 2.9 GPA and 20 ACT and am one of the only African Americans in my school(a private school)…after HS i hope to attend Morehouse College and as a career path ive been thinking of landing a job with a private equity firm or Goldman Sachs in their private equity arm..my main focus is getting an internship with Goldman Sachs and if u didn’t know Morehouse and Goldman Sachs have a close relationship(just look it up)..after college i hope to work somewhere for two years then go to a top business school..what type of advise would you give me and what type of things do I need to do in college and during the summers to get into a good business school and land an internship?

Gold Smith answers:

I would encourage you to polish your English skills so you can put forth applications and letters that shine with promise. For that you need to learn the difference between advise and advice. You also need to avoid texting shortcuts, use capital letters where appropriate and space properly.

Take plenty of math, statistics and logic along the way. Visit a local stock brokerage. Read several financial publications monthly.

You sound thoughtful and ambitious. With a little serious work, you will present an attractive package.

Carol asks…

Gold Smith answers:

Your GPA needs to be over 3.5
You need community service
You need after school activities where you show leadership

In college you need the same as above
Doesn’t matter what kind of relationship Morehouse has with Goldman Sachs – you need better grades.

Your Questions About Selling Gold

Mary asks…

What is the whole deal with the Goldman Sachs company?

I have to do a project on political cartoons, and there is one on Goldman Sachs. The judge is asking the man: “How do you plead?” and the man responds with “Not guilty but also betting a bundle I’ll be found guilty to hedge my bets.” If anyone can explain this to me, since I am unsure of what happened with Goldman Sachs, I’ll be very grateful.

Gold Smith answers:

Goldman sold bad mortgages to investors
At the same time they shorted these mortgages to the “smarter” investors.
They knew the market was going to tank – a lot of investors saw it coming.
Shorting means betting against
The guy made 1 BILLION dollars that year by shorting the same funds he sold to the other company.

Helen asks…

Where can I find early information about the Goldman Sachs fiasco?

I need to write a paper exploring the allegations against Goldman Sachs and Goldman‘s rebuttal and defenses. Thanks to anyone that can help!

Gold Smith answers:

There is lots of information about that on the internet. Try latimesblogs.latimes.com/money for sample

Ken asks…

Why do people criticize Goldman Sachs so much for corrupting the government?

I’m not defending them, they are a bunch of crooks, but aren’t other banks just as bad? Is it because Goldman Sachs is the most famous one?

Gold Smith answers:

Exactly who is saying that GS is “corrupting the government”? Who are these “people” you refer to?

Paul asks…

What is the average lifespan of a hundred-dollar 5000 btu Goldstar window AC?

I bought it in may 2004 and I leave it on all day during summer months. How long can I expect to have it until it breaks?

Gold Smith answers:

If it is taken care of, it could last well over 10 years. You may have to have a little maintainence done on it from time to time.

Chris asks…

i would like the french bread recipe found in a goldstar bread maker cookbook hope some one can help?

it only has about 3 or 4 ingredients and was the best bread i have ever made, I cannot find goldstar breadmakers here in australia since mine broke down

Gold Smith answers:

CHEESY FRENCH BREAD

1 lg. French bread
2 sticks butter
3-4 tbsp. Oil
1 c. Grated cheddar cheese
1 c. Grated Mozzarella cheese
Pepper, garlic powder & onion powder

Soften butter and cheese by letting it stand at room temperature. Mix with the oil and seasonings. Split one large French bread lengthwise and spread mixture nicely to the edges. Lay each piece, face side up on cookie sheet. Sprinkle more seasonings if desired (like Parmesan cheese and dill weed). Bake 20 minutes at 350 degrees. Cut in wedges.

Ruth asks…

How do I turn on my energy saver mode on my Goldstar Air Conditioner?

I no longer have the remote and don’t know how to turn it on without it. I also no longer have the manual. Is there a special way to turn the energy saver mode on without it?

Gold Smith answers:

Don’t you think you can try to contact the customer service?
I think they’ll have the solution, or even provide you with a new remote… Should ask :)

Your Questions About Selling Gold

Mark asks…

Is now a good time to get into stocks?

I recently came in to possession of about 50K.

Interest rates are laughable, EE bonds (was my conservative choice until..) the goverment screwed the float rate to a fixed rate so now at this time would be a sucker move to lock in crap rates for 20 years.

Looking at stocks now but any suggestions as for timing in/any companies in particular at a significant discount?

I was looking at name brand big guys who are in the sewer right now and looking at the charts are at least 50% off the price for the past few years (GM,GE,BAC) in addition to some drug companies (theravance in particular).

I was think about putting 1/3 into staple stocks (Industries which are well in any economy like tobacco, alcohol, pharmaceuticals) so Altria group and the like.

Another 1/3 split into several of the big potentially dead name branders (dividends are very impressive and the price should they recover on some of these guys is insane)

With the last partI would like to have into the futures of oil and possibly silver.

My question is do you think it is possible for yet another meltdown- not 15% but another cut in half scenario. Also how are OIL etf’s traded/what is a good etf to cover the sum of oil as futures seem a bit too much expense wise and complication wise. I don’t understand the commodity trade as well as I should but wish to invest in the price as a whole rather than output from a particular locale/grade.

Basically I want paper oil w/o cherry picking the fine points so much like looking for a bond fund without going and buying up treasury, municipals and junks.

Gold Smith answers:

Yes, BUT –

Not with your current plan. Diversification is key! Don’t try to outperform the market — just try to match overall market gains.

Also — only invest in stocks if you’re going to leave the money alone for at least 5 years. Don’t be a trader — be an investor.

Now, if I got 50k, I would:

- Talk to an accountant or at least estimate my tax liability and save that much in a money market account.

- Pay off high-rate debt (student loan for me)

- Split the remaining money in thirds and invest it in these mutual funds:
1. Vanguard 500 index (VFINX)
2. Vanguard international value (VTRIX)
3. Vanguard longterm corporate bond (VWESX)

If you try this advice and it works for you, let us know.

Gold Smith answers:

You’re in great shape.

The most important components for a video editing machine are the CPU and RAM- and you’ve got those covered. You need a decent video card, but nothing extravagant. Your GT220 isn’t a bad choice, just make sure it’s a DDR3 model.

The video card is where things get weird. I usually recommend ATI Radeon cards because they have a better performance/price ratio, and historically they’ve been better at home theatre and DVD/HD playback than Nvidia’s GeForce cards, which were geared more for gaming. Also, from a purely subjective standpoint, I find ATI’s cards have better image quality. I’ve owned several cards from both companies over the years (FX5200, Rage 128, 7900GT, X1950XT, GeForce 8800GTS Radeon 4670) but put them side-by-side…. The difference is apparent to me.

However, in the very latest round of technology advances (Nvidia’s CUDA vs ATI’s Stream) Nvidia seems to have the edge. Seems like they’ve been making up ground over the past 4 years. It may be due to poorly-written software on ATI’s part instead of a real advantage to Nvidia’s hardware approach, I don’t know. It certainly seems like GPU-assisted encoding is very primitive right now, a thing more for hobbyists than someone who cares about the quality of the results. Still, check out the articles linked below:

Also, post your build on Afterdawn’s forums, too… That’s where the hardcore video editing crowd hangs out. Someone there will probably have more insights into optimizing your build.

Your Questions About Selling Gold

Nancy asks…

A factor conversion question?

It has been estimated that there are 4.10e^-6 mg of gold per liter of sea water. At a price of $22.30 per gram of gold, what would be the value of gold in 1.00 cubic kilometers of the ocean?

While doing this problem, I keep messing up on one step, but I can’t figure out which one. Please show me the steps as you do the problem.

Gold Smith answers:

First of all you need to know that there is 1,000 L per metre squared of water.

So I cubic kilometer would be 1 km * 1 km * 1 km…. OR….

1000 m * 1000 m * 1000 m = 1,000,000,000 m^3 of water in 1 km^3.

If we have 1,000,000,000 m^3 of water and there is 1000 L per m^3 of water, we can say that we have:

1,000,000,000 m^3 * 1000 L/m^3 = 1,000,000,000,000 L of water in this km^3.

And if there is 4.10 times ten to the -6 mg of gold per litre of water we can say we have:

4.10 E – 6 mg/L * 1,000,000,000,000 L = 4,100,000 mg of gold in this amount of water.

BUT… We are told the price in terms of grams of gold (not mg of gold) therefore dividing this number (in mg) by 1000 will give us our mass of gold (in grams).

Grams of Gold in 1 km^3 of water = 4,100 grams

and at a value of $22.3 / g, we will have 4,100 g * $22.3/ g = $91,430

Carol asks…

how much is my 9 carat gold necklace worth?

Hi

Ive a 459 gram 9 carat gold necklace which im wanting to sell, ive had a value of £3400 for scrap value though it is definitely not scrap..Could anyone give me UK contact details of any refineries that they think would offer me at least £10 per gram as i no myself to buy this type of necklace would cost around £8000 of a jewellers.

Gold Smith answers:

Ignore the jeweler price. Jeweler’s markups are legendary. The scrap dealer is paying for the gold in the necklace, and he is out to make a profit. Let’s take a look at that.

You can check spot prices anytime here:

http://www.kitco.com/market/bp_charts.html

Spot price for 24K is* £22.393 per gram, multiply that by 9/24 because your gold is 9K.

I get £8.39 per gram so your 459 gram necklace has a spot value of approximately £3854*

* Spot prices change rapidly – check again before you buy or sell.

That scrap value is actually not that bad, you would expect to sell at a discount to spot value.
Certainly nobody is likely to offer you more than the spot value.

You might do better in a private sale if you can find a buyer.

Grandpa

Chris asks…

how would you work these out?

i need help please
please explain well

There are a total of 100 coins in nickels, dimes, and quarters that total $18. There are 3 times as many quarters than there are nickels. How many coins does she have of each kind?

How much silver @ $5 per gram would a chemist have to mix with gold valued @ $30 per gram to obtain 25 grams of an alloy worth $15 per gram?

please if possible don’t use only one variable
and like mentioned, EXPLAIN THOROUGHLY
because I need to learn how to do it on my own.

thank you very much :)

Gold Smith answers:

Have a seat, my friend… I’ll explain all this to you…

The 1st problem…

Okay… Let N = # of nickels, let D = # of dimes, and let Q = # of quarters. You know that there are a total of 100 coins… So that is telling you that N + D + Q = 100. Follow me? That’s one equation… I’ll call it Eqn. 1.

They also tell you that all of these coins add up to $18, right? So how much is a quarter written as a decimal? 0.25 And how much is a dime written as a decimal? 0.10 And how much is a nickel written as a decimal? 0.05

Okay… To figure out the total, you would multiply the number of coins of each kind, by the coin’s monetary value… Like this…

0.25Q + 0.10D + 0.05N = 18.00 (remember, the total is $18)

This is another equation… I’ll call this Eqn. 2.

Okay… Now they also tell you that “there are 3 times as many quarters as there are nickels. So that means that you have… You have Q is 3 time the nickels… Which translates to the equation Q = 3N . I’ll call this Eqn. 3.

Okay… So you have 3 equations. Let me rewrite them for you…

N + D + Q = 100 (Eqn. 1)
0.25Q + 0.10D + 0.05N = 18.00 (Eqn. 2)
Q = 3N (Eqn. 3)

Rewrite Eqn. 1, solving for D

N + D + Q = 100

D = 100 – N – Q

Subsitute D = 100 – N – Q into Eqn. 2… Like this…

0.25Q + 0.10D + 0.05N = 18.00 (Eqn. 2)

…after substitution of D, becomes…

0.25Q + 0.10(100 – N – Q) + 0.05N = 18.00

Distribute the 0.10 to all the terms in the ( )’s… And you’ll get…

0.25Q + 10 – 0.10N – 0.10Q + 0.05N = 18.00

Combine “like” terms… And you get…

0.15Q – 0.05N + 10 = 18

Move the 10 to the other side by adding -10 to both sides…

0.15Q – 0.05N = 18 – 10

0.15Q – 0.05N = 8

BUT … Remember what Eqn. 3 was? Eqn. 3 says…

Q = 3N (Eqn. 3)

So…. Substitute 3N for Q in the previous equation…

0.15Q – 0.05N = 8 (before substitution)

0.15(3N) – 0.05N = 8

0.45N – 0.05N = 8

0.40N = 8

** divide both sides by 0.40 **

0.40N / 0.40 = 8 / 0.40 ** the 0.40′s on the left cancel out **

And you find out that…

N = 20 … This tells us that she has 20 nickels.

But remember that problem says that she has 3 times as many quarters as nickels. So that means that she has 60 quarters. You can also find this from plugging N = 20 into Eqn. 3, which says Q = 3N

Q = 3N… We know that N = 20… So Q = 3N = 3(20) = 60 quarters… See that? Great!

Now you know that she has 100 coins all together…. Remember Eqn. 1? Q + D + N = 100

We know Q = 60 and N = 20…. We can find the number of dimes D. How?

Well, solve for D…

Q + D + N = 100

That means…. D = 100 – Q – N = 100 – 60 – 20 = 20 dimes…

So she has 60 quarters, 20 dimes, and 20 nickels…

That’s how you do this problem…

Let’s check your answers…. Your answers for Q, D, and N should fit your three equations…

Question 1: Do the number of coins add up to 100?

Q + D + N = 100 (This was Eqn. 1)

60 + 20 + 20 = 100 ? YES… True. Great!

Question 2: Do the coins total $18?

0.25Q + 0.10D + 0.05N (That was Eqn. 2, remember?)

($0.25)(60) + ($0.10)(20) + ($0.05)(20) = $18? Let’s see…

$15 + $2 + $1 = $18 ? YES… True. Great!

Question 3: Do you have 3 times as many quarters as nickels?

Q = 3N (Remember this was Eqn. 3?)

60 = 3(20) ? Is this true? YES!!!! GREAT!!

So it’s confirmed… She has 60 quarters, 20 dimes, and 20 nickels.

Hope this helps and is thorough enough for you!

I’m not a chemist, but let me try my hand at Problem 2:

How much silver @ $5 per gram would a chemist have to mix with gold valued @ $30 per gram to obtain 25 grams of an alloy worth $15 per gram?

Okay… Let S = # of grams of silver…. And let G = # of grams of gold.

So somehow when you add the grams of S and G, you should end up with 25 grams. Okay, now try to write the equation. You have silver… And you are adding gold, and you end up with 25 grams total. Doesn’t that sound to you like S + G = 25 grams? Okay… I’m going to call that Eqn. 1

What else do we know?

The tell us that silver cost $5 per gram… And gold cost $30 per gram…. That’s like the “monetary values of $0.25, $0.10, and $0.05 of the quarters, dimes, and nickels in the 1st problems…. See that?

Okay… Do exactly what you had done for the 1st problem…. But this time it’s going to be…

# of grams of whatever metal TIMES the value of the metal = # of grams of the alloy TIMES the value of the alloy…

(# of grams of silver)(value of silver) + (# of grams of gold)(value of gold) = (# of grams of alloy)(value of alloy)

(S)($5) + (G)($30) = (25)($15) …. This is Eqn. 2

Simplified, Eqn. 2 can be written…

5S + 30G = 375 (Eqn. 2)

Let me rewrite the two equations for you… We have…

S + G = 25 grams (Eqn. 1)
5S + 30G = 375 (Eqn. 2)

Okay… Now with Eqn. 1, solve for S or G…. It doesn’t matter…

I will solve for G…

S + G = 25 grams (Eqn. 1) becomes… S = 25 – G

Now substitute into Eqn. 2… … Like this…

5S + 30G = 375 (Eqn. 2) …. Before substitution of S

5(25 – G) + 30G = 375 (Eqn. 2)

** distribute the 5 ** … And you’ll get…

125 – 5G + 30G = 375

** combine “like” terms ** and you get…

125 + 25G = 375

subtract 125 from both sides… Like this…

(125 + 25G) – 125 = 375 – 125

**combine “like terms**

25G = 250

** divide both sides by 25 **

25G / 25 = 250 / 25 ** the 25′s on the left side cancel out **

leaving you with…

G = 10

Now remember that Eqn. 1 says S + G = 25 grams…

We know that we have 10 grams of gold…. So that means that you have 15 grams of silver…

S + G = 25

S = 25 – G = 25 – 10 = 15 grams.. That’s how you find the amount of silver

P.S. These were hard because they took me awhile and I’m probably twice your age!!! LOL :o )

Anyway, I hope these are thorough explanations for you.

Laura asks…

How was the Alaska Gold Rush similar to and different from the California Gold Rush?

I need help with two questions about the Alaska Gold Rush. I just really really don’t understand it at all.

1. How was the Alaska Gold Rush similar to and different from the California Gold Rush?

2. What were conditions like for settlers in Alaska? How did they adapt to the new environment?

Thanks you guys so much!
That’s not all of my homework. That’s just the two questions out of 15 that I didn’t understand.
But thank you anyways.

Gold Smith answers:

Similarities – Both Alaskan Natives and California Natives were attacked, slaughtered and pushed off of their lands by travelers.

Differences – Alaska Gold Rush was more significant because there were very few people that left with less than $5,000… Some even became millionaires! Also, Alaska’s gold is still being mined! In fact, my grandfather and family still run a wealthy gold mine every summer.
In California most travelers left with very little more money than they arrived with.

However I’m not going to do all your homework! Do some research you’ll appreciate American History more! Have a good day!

Jenny asks…

How do runescape gold sites make the trade?

I am wondering how “Runescape Gold Sellers” on the internet make the trade. They obviously can’t drop trade items so how do runescape gold sellers trade the purchased gold/item(s) to buyers runescape account. I am not planning on buying any but i am just curious.

Gold Smith answers:

Correct Answer: They Can’t.

Prevously, before the trade limit, you could pay 5 dollars for 1 million gp. With the intorduction of the Trade limit, though, this entire business has died. There are no ways to transfer that amount of Gold with Jagex noticing.

BTW: Today, the trade limit was raised to 5k (previously 3k) and also, Non-members who have 32 Quest Points can now Trade 10k.
